Service Manager

Rick McHattie is former service manager of German Car Service, a major independent Mercedes shop in Hawaii. Prior to that, he was the service manager for BMW of Honolulu for four years. Rick’s knowledge of BMW and Mercedes, as well as managing both a major dealer and an independent operation, has given him a unique insight into the automotive business. Rick’s focus is to continue our tradition of delivering personalized customer service of a small shop with the technical proficiency of a major dealer.

Rick’s Bio:

Graduated from Radford High School and University of Hawaii (B.A. Sociology). Attended UH Business School Master’s Degree program and achieved certification in Small Business Management. Factory trained in Bosch, Mercedes-Benz and BMW products.

Worked in all the Honolulu motorcycle repair shops earning his way through college. Learned all the basics of tuning, engine, transmission and clutch repair along with the basics of service management and parts supply.

Took a three year break after college with plans to start working on a PhD afterwards. At that time worked at an independent VW, BMW and Porsche shop rebuilding engines and became the leading fuel injection technician there. This is where he fell in love with BMWs and Porsches.

Berger’s Autohaus offered a job after he repaired a fuel injection problem for them and so began another job working on BMWs and Mercedes-Benz. Later that led to working as a technician for TheoDavis Euromotors and then as assistant Service Manager. The results of his work for the Mercedes dealer prompted BMW of Honolulu to recruit him as their Service Manager. After managing for four years he tried his hand at being a professional car salesman. It turned out he was better suited for the service department and so he returned for two more years as a service advisor. Mercedes called again and so he then managed the business for German Car Service, a major independent Mercedes shop in Honolulu.

BMW’s continue to be Rick’s favorite car to drive although there is still lots of Mercedes grease in his blood. Currently his mechanical pastime extends not only to BMW but to riding and repairing Ducati motorcycles. Apart from the cars and motorbikes, he has been an avid bicyclist for years riding locally and even doing 400 mile tours through the Rocky Mountains.
